An Education Visa, or Non-Immigrant ED Visa, is a type of visa issued by the Thai government under the supervision of the Immigration Bureau and with certification from the Ministry of Education. This visa is specifically intended to support foreigners who wish to study in Thailand and legally reside in the country for educational purposes, cultural exchange, and academic or language skill development. It applies to various levels of education, including primary school, secondary school, universities, international schools, and short-term courses such as Thai, English, or other language studies.

Unlike the Tourist Visa, which allows only short-term stays for tourism, the ED Visa allows a longer stay. The initial visa is typically valid for 90 days and can be extended for up to one year at a time throughout the duration of the course.

• It provides a stable residency status, enabling students to live, study, and adapt to life in Thailand continuously.
• It is a popular option for foreigners who wish to study Thai or English in Thailand, as the cost is lower than in many other countries while still maintaining good educational quality.

A common misconception is that an ED Visa allows the holder to work in Thailand. In reality, this visa is strictly intended for educational purposes only. ED Visa holders are not permitted to work, and anyone who wishes to work must apply separately for a Work Visa (Non-B) and a Work Permit.

Types of ED Visa

• For students → schools, universities, colleges
• For language study → Thai, English, Chinese, or other languages at private institutions
• For training/research → specialized training programs, research projects, academic exchanges
• For special activities → such as art, music, Muay Thai, or programs certified by the Ministry of Education

Application Process

• Enroll and receive an acceptance letter from the institution
• Pay the tuition fee (proof of payment is often required)
• The institution issues a certification letter to the Ministry of Education to confirm the student’s enrollment
• Submit the documents to a Thai Embassy/Consulate abroad or at the Immigration Office in Thailand (for those changing from a Tourist Visa)
• Wait for processing (usually 5–10 business days)

Additional Requirements

• Visa extension : Must be renewed before expiration, and the institution must confirm that the student is actively studying
• Academic attendance : Students must meet the attendance requirements; excessive absences may lead to visa cancellation
• Leaving the country : If traveling outside Thailand, a Re-entry Permit must be obtained; otherwise, the visa will be canceled immediately

Fees : Visa fee is approximately 2,000 THB; extension fee is 1,900 THB (subject to policy changes)

• Cannot work under this visa
  • ED Visa holders are not permitted to work or earn income in Thailand. Violations may result in visa cancellation and penalties under Thai law.
• Must report every 90 days
  • Holders must report their residential address to Immigration every 90 days to maintain legal stay.
• May be canceled if not actively studying
  • If the institution reports excessive absences or lack of academic progress, Immigration may revoke the visa, and in some cases, the individual may be blacklisted from re-entering Thailand.
• Not suitable for those intending to work or conduct business
  • This visa is designed strictly for educational purposes. Those whose primary intent is to work should instead apply for a Work Visa (Non-B).
